Google to invest $10 billion in Visakhapatnam data hub, its biggest bet on India

Google is set to invest $10 billion (approximately Rs 8,730 crore) to build a massive data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam—a project that could mark its largest direct investment in India’s digital economy, reported The Economic Times.

According to details accessed by the publication, the 1 GW-capacity data centre hub will comprise three campuses spread across Adavivaram and Tarluvada villages in Visakhapatnam district and Rambilli village in Anakapalli district.

The facilities are expected to become operational by July 2028.

The project will include the construction of three high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated cable landing stations, metro fibre networks, and advanced telecommunications infrastructure.

Once complete, the Visakhapatnam cluster is expected to become Asia’s largest data centre region.

Sources told the business daily that the formal contours of the agreement are likely to be finalised between Google’s leadership and Andhra Pradesh’s IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh during a meeting in New Delhi on October 14.

The state’s Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is expected to approve the proposal on Wednesday.

This will be Google’s first large-scale data infrastructure investment in India. Globally, the tech giant and its subsidiaries operate data centres across 11 countries, including the US, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, and Germany.

Naidu had signed a memorandum of understanding with Google in December 2024, shortly after returning to power.

Since then, Andhra Pradesh has been actively positioning itself as a hub for data infrastructure. Earlier this year, Naidu proposed amendments to the IT Act and Copyright Act to promote the development of “data cities.”

In May, a Google Asia-Pacific delegation visited Visakhapatnam to inspect potential sites for the project, accompanied by Lokesh.

The upcoming cluster will form a key part of India’s first international AI Infrastructure Hub — an integrated digital ecosystem aimed at powering advanced research, innovation, and economic growth across the country.
