In what could become one of the most unexpected creative crossovers of the year, filmmaker James Cameron has teamed up with global pop phenomenon Billie Eilish for a 3D concert film based on her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour. Cameron, known for pushing cinematic technology, invited Eilish to co-direct the film. In an exclusive to India Today, Cameron reveals why he made the offer, and Eilish reveals why the offer came as a surprise to her.
For Eilish, who has maintained tight control over her visual and sonic identity since her breakout, saw the proposal as both validation and an opportunity. “James Cameron is an Oscar-winning filmmaker and the king of 3D!” she says. “I never expected somebody of that stature to make an offer to co-direct with me. That was pretty magical. Once it was confirmed that we were doing it, we sprang into action. He came to see my show in Australia, and we spent a lot of time talking through everything on the phone.”
For Cameron, the decision was instinctive. “Billie is the architect of an amazing show,” he said, adding, “She knows every beat so specifically. She knows her fans intimately and could talk me through that. What I know is how a movie works. I also knew the new technology I wanted to use because my company developed it. So, it became a perfect creative collaboration.”
For Cameron, whose legacy includes redefining 3D storytelling in films like Avatar, the project marks a shift towards hybrid storytelling, where live performance and cinematic immersion intersect. The film, titled Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour (Live in 3D), will use cutting-edge visual technology to translate the intimacy and scale of Eilish’s performances into a theatrical experience.
The timing is notable. Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft era has already leaned heavily into immersive world-building, with fans and critics alike noting the theatricality of her live shows. Translating that into 3D cinema could position the project as a benchmark for concert films, a format that has seen renewed global interest in recent years.
The concert film will release in Indian theatres on May 8.
