CSK vs MI preview: Hardik Pandya under fire as Mumbai Indians seek Chepauk revenge

With the possibility of finishing with the wooden spoon looming over the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya’s much-debated captaincy will be under intense scrutiny as they look to end their losing streak against the very side that began it.

Mumbai have a habit of making late pushes for the playoffs, and this derby against their eternal rivals could provide the perfect platform for MI to signal a return to contention. They come into this counter with back-to-back losses at home and only have two wins in eight games this season thus far.

Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, are stuck in mid-table, unable to string together consistent wins – a very hot-and-cold season by their lofty standards. ‘Thala’ MS Dhoni, who helped set those standards, appears far from returning to the side due to a calf injury. Ironically, his absence could serve as a positive in some ways, as his presence around the team continues to draw support and could help galvanize them for a late push toward the playoffs.

They currently have three wins from eight games. CSK will hope to draw inspiration from that crushing win at the Wankhede and complete a double against their arch rivals.

VULNERABILITIES

Opener Sanju Samson has begun to find form, but the injury to Ayush Mhatre has disrupted the middle-order balance. The team has already cycled through 19 players this season and still hasn’t settled on its best XI. Two points against Mumbai can help revitalize their campaign especially since two of their next three games after the Saturday fixture come against bottom-placed Lucknow Supergiants. But for starters, they need a solution to their impact sub woes.

The situation is similar for MI, where key players like Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have yet to hit peak form. Captain Pandya has plenty to ponder, especially as his side has rotated through as many as 22 players this season, given the injury setbacks the team has faced this season.

With time running out and the top half of the table beginning to pull away, neither team can afford further slip-ups.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Ruturaj Gaikwad – While Hardik Pandya’s captaincy has been under the scanner, his counterpart Gaikwad is also facing pressure—not only for his on-field decisions in the absence of MS Dhoni but also for his batting contributions. He has managed just 178 runs at a strike rate of 121.08 while opening the innings, with only one score above fifty. Saturday’s derby could prove to be a make-or-break moment in his season.

Will Jacks – With no fresh updates on the injuries to Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock, MI are likely to persist with Jacks and Rickelton for this high-stakes clash. In his first game of the season, Jacks provided a rapid start against Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring 43 off 22 balls before being dismissed by Nitish Kumar Reddy. He was used sparingly with the ball, conceding 19 runs without taking a wicket. MI will hope he can shake off any rustiness and rediscover the form he displayed for England during the T20 World Cup in February 2026.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

Recent matches at Chepauk suggest the surface has become more batting-friendly, allowing batters to take advantage of pace and bounce to play their shots freely. This fixture will be played on the same pitch where Punjab Kings successfully chased down 210 with more than an over to spare against the hosts.

However, if the surface offers even a hint of slowness, it could turn into a contest dominated by spinners, a challenge MI struggled to handle in the previous meeting between these two sides earlier this season, when Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmed ripped through their star-studded batting line-up.

Weather conditions indicate the presence of clouds, but rain is unlikely to interrupt play. It is expected to be windy, with clear to partly cloudy skies overall.

PREDICTED XI

Chennai Super Kings:
Sanju Samson (WK), Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Sarfaraz Khan/Urvil Patel, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Akeal Hosein, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary/Ramakrishna Ghosh, Gurjapneet Singh

Impact Sub: Noor Ahmad

Mumbai Indians:
Ryan Rickelton (WK), Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav, Naman Dhir, Hardik Pandya (c), Tilak Varma, Robin Minz, Shardul Thakur/Krish Bhagat, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwani Kumar

Impact Sub: AM Ghazanfar

Both teams find themselves at a critical juncture in the season, where every match carries immense significance. A win here could reignite playoff hopes, while another loss might push them further away from contention.
