Apple iPhone 18 Pro leak reveals design, camera upgrades expected

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup is already generating plenty of buzz, with rumours and leaks hinting at possible upgrades. Amid all the speculation, one area drawing particular attention is the design. While reports suggest it may not look dramatically different at first glance, a new dummy leak indicates that the real story could lie in the camera hardware. Freshly surfaced dummy units of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max point to a noticeably thicker rear camera setup, even as the overall design remains largely unchanged.

The images, shared by Max Tech’s Vadim Yuryev, show early dummy units based on leaked CAD renders from Apple’s supply chain. These models are typically used by accessory makers and tend to get the dimensions right, making them a useful early indicator of what’s coming. In the latest leak Yuryev shared, they suggest Apple is bulking up the camera module on its next Pro iPhones.

Yuryev says the dummy units have “much thicker cameras”, with the black glass covering the lenses also protruding more than before. He adds that the camera plateau itself is “a bit thicker” than the one on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. In a comparison shot, the silver device — believed to be the iPhone 18 Pro Max — sits next to a blue iPhone 17 Pro Max dummy, making the difference in the camera bump fairly obvious.

What’s interesting is that the rest of the phone doesn’t seem to change much. Yuryev notes that the dimensions are almost identical, with only a marginal increase in height and width. The added bulk appears to be concentrated around the camera area, suggesting Apple is prioritising imaging upgrades without reworking the entire design.

He also stands by the accuracy of these units, describing them as “spot on”, similar to the iPhone 17 Pro dummies he received last year from the same source.

Everything we know about iPhone 18 Pro Max

If the thicker camera module looks like a deliberate move, that’s likely because it is. The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to bring a set of meaningful camera upgrades that could justify the extra bulk. One of the headline changes is a variable aperture on the main 48-megapixel sensor, which would allow users to manually control how much light enters the lens, something that could make a noticeable difference in tricky lighting conditions.

There’s also talk of a wider aperture for the telephoto lens, which should help improve low-light zoom performance. Another upgrade being discussed is a new three-layer stacked image sensor, reportedly developed by Samsung. This type of sensor could make the camera faster and more responsive, while also reducing noise and improving dynamic range. In everyday terms, that means cleaner photos, better detail and more consistent results across different lighting scenarios.

Beyond the camera, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to run on Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, likely built on a 2nm process. That should translate into faster speeds and better power efficiency. Paired with Apple’s in-house C2 modem, users can expect improved 5G connectivity and potentially better battery life. The Pro Max variant could also get a larger battery, reportedly around 5,200mAh, which should help with more comfortable all-day usage.

Design-wise, don’t expect major changes. The iPhone 18 Pro is likely to look familiar, but with subtle refinements such as a smaller Dynamic Island and a more polished camera module. There is also talk of a new Dark Cherry colour, giving the Pro lineup a more premium and understated finish.

As for pricing, Apple is expected to maintain its premium positioning. The iPhone 18 Pro could start at around $999 (roughly Rs 83,000), while the Pro Max may go higher depending on storage.

The devices are expected to debut around September, with a foldable iPhone also rumoured to arrive around the same time.
