WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, frequently rolls out updates for its iOS and Android users. Now, a new report suggests that the company is working on an update for its web version to improve the overall user experience. WhatsApp is reportedly developing chat themes for its web client, a feature that has long been available on mobile apps. This update is expected to significantly improve visual appeal and customisation options for desktop users.
According to details shared by WABetaInfo, the upcoming feature will allow users to choose a default chat theme on WhatsApp Web. These themes will modify the appearance of conversations by changing message bubble colours, along with matching wallpapers to create a more cohesive look.
Currently, customisation on WhatsApp Web remains limited, with users only able to set a default wallpaper and add doodle overlays. The introduction of chat themes is expected to address this gap and bring the web experience closer to its Android and iOS counterparts.
The feature will also support chat-level customisation, allowing users to assign different themes to individual conversations. This means each chat can have a distinct look, making it easier to visually differentiate between personal, work or group chats.
WhatsApp is said to be testing up to 49 theme variations, including multiple shades and tonal options for colours like blue. These variations aim to give users more flexibility in fine-tuning their preferred look. More importantly, chat themes will remain private, meaning any changes made will only be visible to the user applying them and will not affect how chats appear to others.
The feature is currently under development and is expected to roll out to beta testers first, before becoming widely available to all users in a future update.
Earlier, WhatsApp was also spotted working on several interesting features. A recent report suggested that the company is planning to roll out a username feature on its platform, likely as part of a phased release in the coming months. This functionality would allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, as they could simply use unique usernames instead. The move is expected to make communication both easier and more secure by adding an extra layer of privacy.
