Indian robots will rival the world’s best in 3-5 years, will be cheaper too: Bidyut MD

Bidyut Innovation’s Managing Director Rahul Shah discussed India’s role in the world of robotics during the India Today Conclave 2026. During Shah’s session, two robots took on stage that were built in China. Rahul insisted that these robots can help motivate students to build something similar in India.

He said, “The objective is not to offer these robots, but to ensure such kind of robots, when we plant or offer to educational institutions of the country, the students get inspired and to ensure that they develop something like this.”

Rahul Shah was asked when India can finally have its own robots competing against those built by foreign companies. He predicted that this could happen soon. Shah explained, “I don’t see it that far. But within 3 to 5 years, I’m very confident that Indian robots will take over any other robots in the world.”

Shah’s comments come after Galgotia University faced scrutiny for claiming it had built a robot dog that was actually created by a Chinese firm.

Indian robots to be cheaper

The Bidyut Innovation MD insisted that India has surprised the world in the past when it comes to technology. Rahul reckoned that just like how India built the Chandrayaan at a fraction of the cost of similar probes built by other companies, Indian robots can be cheaper too.

He added, “India was expert in sending Chandrayaan. At one fourth of the cost, the world could actually do it. So, India is very well known for cost-cutting. And for building something the future wants.”

Following Shah’s comments, the two robots even delivered a short dance performance on stage. Rahul said, “It took us 10 days to code the choreography.”

The robot also gave some humorous comments on stage. When asked if it likes humans, the robot replied, “I’m programmed to say yes, but I have seen your WhatsApp forwards, and it is becoming difficult to like you.”

Robots are becoming an increasingly important aspect for automation. Tech billionaire Elon Musk believes that Tesla’s Optimus robot will be able to automate majority of tasks, and similar humanoid robots will likely do all the work. Musk’s future vision indicates a scenario where humans will be free from work and can do anything they want, such as growing vegetables.
