Bayern and Atletico dominate, Liverpool and Barcelona under pressure in Champions League round of 16

Bayern beat Atalanta BC 6-1, even though their top scorer Harry Kane did not start the game.

Atletico also had a strong performance against Tottenham Hotspur and won the match 5-2.

Meanwhile, Liverpool lost 1-0 to Galatasaray and will need to win the second leg at Anfield to stay in the competition.

Barcelona avoided defeat at the last moment when 18-year-old Lamine Yamal scored a late penalty to secure a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United

Even without star striker Harry Kane, Bayern Munich came very close to reaching the quarterfinals after a strong win against Atalanta BC.

In his absence, Michael Olise scored two goals. Serge Gnabry and Nicolas Jackson both scored and also helped create goals. Josip Stanisic and Jamal Musiala also scored for the German champions.

Tottenham Hotspur had a terrible start in Madrid. Their backup goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky made mistakes that helped Atletico Madrid score two of their first three goals. Because of these errors, Kinsky was substituted in the 17th minute.

Kinsky was making his Champions League debut and his slip and miskick in the sixth gave Marcos Llorente the chance to open the scoring.

Antoine Griezmann made it 2-0 for Atletico before Kinsky miskicked again and Julian Alvarez slotted into an empty net.

Antonin Kinsky looked very upset when he was replaced by Guglielmo Vicario. However, just five minutes after coming on, Vicario also conceded a goal when Robin Le Normand scored Atletico Madrid’s fourth goal.

“We knew how to take advantage of our opponents’ mistakes to gain a good lead, and now we go into the second leg with a three-goal advantage,” Alvarez said.

Spurs rallied, but it will take an unlikely comeback in the second leg to avoid elimination.

“We gave away three goals at the start, and then it became very difficult for us,” Tudor said.

According stats provider Opta, this was the first time in Tottenham’s history that it has lost six games in a row.

Five-time European champion FC Barcelona was very close to losing the match when Malick Thiaw fouled Dani Olmo inside the penalty box.

Referee Marco Guida awarded a penalty. 18-year-old Lamine Yamal stayed calm and scored against goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, even though the home fans were hoping he would miss.

Yamal scored in the 96th minute, and the referee blew the final whistle right after the penalty goal.

“It wasn’t a great game from us, but we have a young team,” Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said. “We have to improve, but we have a lot of potential. We have to make things better, and we will.”

Newcastle United took the lead in the 86th minute when Harvey Barnes scored from close range. Earlier in the match, the forward had also come close to scoring but his curling shot hit the goalpost.

“It’s tough. You score and it’s an amazing feeling — you can feel the fans. We’d played really well,” Barnes said. “To concede late on is really hard to take, but the score is level and we have a second leg to come.”

First it defeated Juventus FC and now Liverpool FC. Galatasaray is beating some of Europe’s biggest football clubs.

The Turkish champion won the first leg 1–0 in Istanbul, giving it an advantage in the round-of-16 tie.

Mario Lemina scored the winning goal with a header in the 7th minute. Galatasaray had already surprised Juventus earlier by beating them 7–5 on aggregate in the playoffs.

“We want to win there too, we want to reach the quarter-finals,” Lemina said.

It is the second time Galatasaray has beaten Liverpool this season, having won by the same scoreline in the league phase.

It had chances to take an even bigger lead to Merseyside, with Victor Osimhen’s second-half strike ruled out for offside. Liverpool saw Ibrahima Konate’s effort disallowed by VAR for handball.

“What I do know is now it’s halftime,” Liverpool coach Arne Slot said. “We’ve lost here twice with 1-0 and the good thing is the next game is not played here. It is played at Anfield and our fans can create a similar atmosphere.”
