“Shut the f*** up”: Magic City debate extends as rapper Killer Mike defends Hawks’ fun night plan following Luke Kornet’s criticism

The Atlanta Hawks grabbed enough attention when they announced a themed night celebrating the city’s famous nightlife hub Magic City. The promotion, scheduled for March 16 during a home game against the Orlando Magic, quickly sparked debate across the NBA.

NBA star Luke Kornet publicly criticized the event. His comments triggered reactions from several voices around and outside the league. Atlanta rapper and activist Killer Mike recently joined the debate, defending the city’s culture and the Hawks’ decision to embrace it.

Killer Mike did not hold back when asked about the controversy surrounding Magic City Night. Speaking to TMZ Sports, the Atlanta native argued that critics were misunderstanding the cultural role the venue plays in the city.

“So you come to Atlanta … and they say they like the girls and the chicken wings, and the city doesn’t have a problem with it, shut the f*** up,” Mike said.

The rapper also aimed his response at NBA players who voiced opposition. His remarks referenced former Hawks star Al Horford and Spurs center Kornet.

“Al Horford, we never f***ed with you anyway,” Mike said. “We don’t f**k with Luke (Kornet). Luke should stay in San Antonio and concern himself with San Antonio business.”

According to Mike, the club has supported performers and created opportunities for many women over the years. “These women have went on to become business owners, moms, wives and more,” he said.

“You are never going to get rid of adult entertainment in Atlanta,” he said.

Atlanta rapper Jayy Wick also backed the idea, saying the city’s nightlife culture has always been part of its identity.

The debate began after Kornet published a blog post criticizing the Hawks’ collaboration with Magic City. He questioned whether celebrating a strip club aligns with the league’s responsibility to maintain a respectful environment for fans.

“Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”

“The celebration of a strip club is not conduct aligned with that vision.”

Despite the criticism, interest around the event has surged. Ticket data from SeatGeek shows the upcoming Hawks matchup is trending as one of the most attended games on the team’s schedule this season. Prices have jumped significantly since the announcement, reflecting strong local curiosity about the promotion.
