A 23-year-old man was arrested on Friday after a purported video showing him publicly harassing a 21-year-old woman went viral.
According to the video, the accused, identified as Kanhaiya Rajak, allegedly harassed the woman when she came to a shop to purchase grocery items at around 8 pm on Thursday. In the footage, Rajak can also be seen placing a lit cigarette on the woman’s cheek, causing an injury.
When the woman attempted to flee, Rajak allegedly tried to forcibly disrobe her in public. The accused is also seen hurling abuses at the shop owner when he tried to intervene.
Residents, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed that the accused is involved in the illegal liquor trade in the area.
“Appropriate action will be taken in this matter. The accused has been apprehended and will be forwarded to jail after interrogation,” deputy SP (law and order) Taukir Alam said.
