L&T shares tumble over 7%: Why is the stock down today?

Shares of Larsen and Toubro (L&T) fell sharply in early trade on Wednesday, emerging as one of the biggest losers on the Nifty50 as rising geopolitical tensions triggered a broad sell-off in equities.

The stock dropped over 7% during the session as investors turned cautious amid escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Around 9:58 am, shares of L&T were trading 7.35% lower at Rs 3,768 on the Nifty50.

The uncertainty has rattled global markets and pushed crude oil prices higher, leading to risk-off sentiment across sectors.

MIDDLE EAST EXPOSURE RATTLES INVESTORS

A key concern weighing on the stock is the company’s significant exposure to the Middle East. L&T has a strong presence in the region through its engineering, construction, hydrocarbons and infrastructure businesses. The company executes several large projects across countries in West Asia, making it sensitive to geopolitical disruptions.

As tensions rise in the region, investors fear that prolonged instability could delay project execution, disrupt supply chains or impact payments. Even the possibility of such disruptions tends to make investors cautious about companies with substantial exposure to conflict-prone regions.

GLOBAL RISK-OFF MOOD HITS CYCLICAL STOCKS

The sharp fall in L&T also reflects the broader sell-off across global markets. Equity markets in Asia traded lower after weakness on Wall Street overnight, as investors moved away from riskier assets amid fears that the conflict could escalate further.

Capital goods and infrastructure companies like L&T are often among the first to see selling pressure during periods of uncertainty because their businesses are closely tied to economic growth and investment cycles. When global risks rise, investors typically reduce exposure to such cyclical sectors.

CRUDE PRICE SURGE ADDS TO MARKET NERVES

Another factor weighing on sentiment is the sharp rise in crude oil prices. The conflict has raised concerns about potential disruptions to oil supplies from the Middle East, a region that accounts for a large share of global energy exports.

Higher oil prices can increase input costs for infrastructure projects and also raise broader macroeconomic risks for countries like India, which imports most of its crude oil. Rising inflation, a wider trade deficit and pressure on the rupee can all affect corporate earnings and investment activity.

Against this backdrop, investors trimmed positions in several large-cap stocks, with L&T emerging as one of the biggest casualties of the broader market volatility.

Market participants will now closely track geopolitical developments and crude oil movements, both of which are likely to influence the stock’s near-term trajectory.
