Wikipedia Locks Gaza Genocide Page After Jimmy Wales Criticism

Key Takeaways

  • Wikipedia locked the ‘Gaza Genocide’ page in November following co-founder Jimmy Wales’ criticism
  • Multiple international bodies have classified Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide
  • The page protection restricts editing to verified accounts with 500+ edits
  • Debate continues over neutral presentation of the conflict on Wikipedia

Wikipedia has locked its controversial ‘Gaza Genocide’ page, restricting edits after co-founder Jimmy Wales personally criticized its neutrality. The protection means only verified editors with accounts older than 30 days and over 500 edits can modify the contentious article.

Why Wikipedia Locked the Gaza Genocide Page

In November, Wikipedia placed enhanced protection on the ‘Gaza Genocide’ page, displaying a lock icon that prevents most users from editing content. The move gained attention when Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales posted a personal statement questioning how the term ‘genocide’ was applied to Gaza.

Wales claimed the page “fails to meet our high standards and needs immediate attention,” though he clarified he was speaking in his personal capacity. Editors had previously enhanced protections in July 2024 and May 2025, with recent locks on October 28 and November 4.

Jimmy Wales’ Neutrality Concerns

Wikipedia’s co-founder criticized how Israel’s actions were being classified as “genocide” and urged presenting it as a contested allegation instead. “A neutral approach would begin with a formulation such as: ‘Multiple governments, NGOs, and legal bodies have described or rejected the characterization of Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide,'” Wales stated.

He emphasized he was leading a group examining neutrality across Wikipedia articles, including topics like “Zionism,” while acknowledging he was speaking personally rather than making an official decision.

International Recognition of Gaza Genocide

Multiple international bodies have formally recognized Israel’s actions as genocide:

  • UN Commission of Inquiry (September 16): Reported Israel committed four of five genocidal acts defined by the 1948 Genocide Convention
  • International Association of Genocide Scholars (August 2025): Stated Israel carried out war crimes and genocide targeting the entire Gazan population
  • Human Rights Watch (December 2024): Found Israeli authorities responsible for “acts of genocide” by restricting water access

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported 67,173 deaths as of October 7 this year, including 20,179 children representing about 30% of casualties, according to Reuters.

Wikipedia’s Content Protection History

This isn’t the first time Wikipedia has locked contentious pages. Thousands of articles covering significant world events, definitions, and celebrity figures have been temporarily protected to prevent partisan edits and Wikipedia “vandalism” ranging from humorous to hateful.

Hundreds of edits have been made to the ‘Gaza Genocide’ page recently, with controversial changes focusing on source interpretation and revision of other contributors’ work. The ongoing debate reflects broader global discussions about how to classify the Israel-Palestine conflict.
