Russia’s Massive 470 Drone Attack Devastates Ternopil, 25 Dead

Key Takeaways

  • Russia launched massive overnight attack with 470 drones and 48 missiles
  • Ternopil suffered worst damage with 25 dead, 73 injured including 3 children
  • Multiple regions targeted including Kharkiv, Lviv, Donetsk and Kyiv
  • European allies pledge over €515 million in new military and economic aid

In what Ukrainian officials describe as the deadliest single night of attacks in 2025, Russian forces unleashed a massive barrage of 470 attack drones and 48 missiles across multiple regions, with the western city of Ternopil bearing the brunt of the assault.

The overnight strikes killed at least 25 people and injured 73 others, including three children, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs. Rescue teams worked through the morning using 45 specialized equipment units, including robotic systems, to search for survivors trapped under collapsed residential buildings.

Ternopil Devastation

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Ternopil suffered “significant destruction” with entire residential blocks heavily damaged just after midnight. Major fires broke out in nine-storey apartment buildings, taking hours to bring under control as emergency workers combed through debris in multiple neighborhoods.

“Teams in many regions were dealing with the aftermath of the strikes, which targeted residential areas and public infrastructure,” Zelenskyy stated on X.

Widespread Regional Attacks

The massive assault extended beyond Ternopil to multiple Ukrainian regions. In Kharkiv, dozens of residents including children were injured, with key transport links and energy supply points damaged. Ivano-Frankivsk reported three injuries, including two children.

Additional strikes hit Lviv, Donetsk, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Cherkasy and Dnipro regions, targeting both energy facilities and civilian areas.

Urgent Defense Needs

President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s critical need for air-defense missiles, additional defense systems, combat aircraft support and increased drone production to prevent further civilian casualties. He noted the conflict has now entered its fourth year and called for Russia to face responsibility for the continued attacks.

European Support Package

Amid the escalating violence, Ukraine secured significant military and economic support during Zelenskyy’s recent European visits. Greece, France and Spain collectively pledged over €515 million in new assistance.

France committed to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities with a long-term agreement including 100 Rafale F4 aircraft by 2035, SAMP/T air-defense systems, advanced radar technology and additional military aid.

Spain announced support packages featuring €100 million for air-defense missiles, €215 million for the SAFE instrument, €200 million for Ukraine’s energy sector and IRIS-T missiles.

Greece agreed to guarantee gas supplies for the winter and expand its role as a regional energy hub for Ukraine.
