“This girl wanted to be famous”: Candace Owens challenges Erika Kirk’s pageant origin story, sparking fresh controversy

Candace Owens has reignited debate around the pageant world by questioning Erika Kirk’s account of how she first entered the industry. Speaking on the February 27 episode of her Bride of Charlie YouTube series, Owens disputed Kirk’s earlier claim that she received a letter nominating her to compete. The comments have brought up new questions about Kirk’s past, how she became famous, and the story she has told about her early life.

Owens framed her argument as an attempt to clear up inconsistencies in Kirk’s story, saying that the order in which she entered the pageant points to a more planned path. Kirk, a former Miss Arizona USA winner and the widow of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, has not responded publicly. Her supporters note that she has recently focused on leading Turning Point USA and raising her children following her husband’s death in 2025.

Candace Owens reignites debate over Erika Kirk’s pageant beginnings

During the episode, Owens rejected Kirk’s description of an unexpected invitation into pageantry. “If you have to say you weren’t groomed for something, you probably were,” Owens said. “And the reality is that every single year, from 2005 through to 2012, Erika was involved in beauty pageants. That’s seven years of her life that we could find. There could be more.”

Owens further alleged that Kirk’s mother helped initiate her participation and suggested that pageant involvement may have helped Kirk build connections and social visibility.

She also cited feedback from pageant participants who disputed the idea that minors are casually invited into competitions, noting that parental submission is typically required.

Kirk previously addressed her pageant background in a resurfaced interview, describing it as a temporary chapter rather than a lifelong ambition. “The pageant world is something that was an interesting season of life,” she said. “It was nothing that I was ever groomed for. It was nothing that was ever on my radar.”

Owens remained unconvinced, stating, “Erika, without question and anybody who’s being objective and honest and looking at her history of the people that she’s dated and the people wanted to be in close proximity to can guarantee that this girl wanted to be famous, like, very badly.”

Kirk’s life changed dramatically after winning Miss Arizona USA in 2012, appearing on reality television, and later marrying Charlie Kirk. Following his assassination in 2025, she stepped into leadership at Turning Point USA, signaling a shift from public personality to organizational leadership while maintaining a low public profile amid renewed media attention.
