The Indian Embassy in Mexico has warned its citizens to seek shelter, minimise unnecessary movements and avoid crowds after violence erupted in several Mexican states triggered by the killing of Mexican drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, better known as El Mencho, in a US-backed military raid.
Within hours of El Mencho’s death, his supporters blocked highways across Mexico and set vehicles and shops ablaze on Sunday.
In a post on X, the Indian embassy asked its nationals in Jalisco State (areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (areas of Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State due to ongoing security operations, criminal activity and related road blockages.
The embassy issued its helpline number and asked Indian citizens to follow local media for updates and contact 911 in case of emergency.
“Avoid areas around law enforcement activity. Be aware of your surroundings. Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements outside your shelter. Monitor local media for updates. Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911,” it said.
“Avoid crowds. Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text, and social media. For assistance please contact the Embassy of India at +52-55-4847-7539,” the embassy added.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
