$980 Million Mega Millions Jackpot Won by Single Georgia Ticket

Georgia Player Wins $980 Million Mega Millions Jackpot

A single winning ticket sold in Georgia has claimed the estimated $980 million Mega Millions jackpot, ending a 40-drawing winless streak and creating the eighth-largest prize in the game’s history.

Key Details

  • Winning Numbers: 1, 8, 11, 12, 57, and Mega Ball 7
  • Location: Publix supermarket in Newnan, roughly 40 miles southwest of Atlanta
  • Payout Options: $980 million over 30 years or $452.2 million lump sum (before taxes)

The winning ticket was sold at a Publix supermarket in Newnan, a city approximately 40 miles southwest of Atlanta. The store will receive a $50,000 retailer bonus for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

Historic Win

This marks the first jackpot claim since June, when a Virginia ticket won $348 million. The $980 million prize is the largest since Mega Millions underwent a significant overhaul in April that increased ticket prices to $5 and raised the starting jackpot to $50 million.

“We are thrilled to congratulate the largest winner in our state’s history,” Georgia Lottery President and CEO Gretchen Corbin said in the news release.

Under the new game structure, the odds of winning the jackpot are now 1 in 290 million.

Other Winners

In the same drawing, a Michigan ticket won $3 million by matching all five white balls with the 3X multiplier. Another 22 tickets matched four white balls and the Mega Ball, each winning $20,000.

The Mega Millions record jackpot remains $1.6 billion, won by a single ticket sold in Florida in August 2023.
