Key Takeaways

  • Vijay Kumar Mahato, 26, from Jharkhand killed in Saudi Arabia crossfire
  • Sent final WhatsApp voice note to wife before dying
  • Indian authorities working to repatriate body and secure compensation

A 26-year-old Indian worker from Jharkhand was killed in Saudi Arabia after being caught in crossfire between police and suspected criminals, sending a final voice message to his wife before his death.

Vijay Kumar Mahato from Giridih district died earlier this month during a shootout in Jeddah. Indian authorities are now making efforts to repatriate his body and secure compensation for his family.

Final Moments Revealed in WhatsApp Message

On October 16, Mahato sent a voice note via WhatsApp to his wife Basanti Devi informing her he had been injured in crossfire. His family initially believed he was receiving treatment, but eight days later, his employer confirmed he had died in the shootout.

Sikander Ali, a migrant rights activist, revealed the shootout occurred between Jeddah police and an extortion gang. Mahato had been working as a tower line fitter for a private company for nine months.

Repatriation Efforts Underway

The Jharkhand labour department has contacted the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to facilitate the return of Mahato’s body. Shikha Lakra, team leader at the Migrant Control Cell, stated they are coordinating with Jeddah police to complete formalities.

Ali has also approached state authorities to ensure the family receives compensation from Saudi authorities. The victim was from Dudhpaniya village in Madh Gopali panchayat under Dumri block of Giridih.
