Russia to Approve 25 Indian Fishery Units for Exports

Key Takeaways

  • Russia to approve nearly 25 Indian fishery units for exports.
  • EU recently approved 102 additional Indian marine product units.
  • India in talks with UAE and others to diversify shrimp and fish exports.
  • Move crucial as US imposes 50% tariff on Indian shrimp.

Russia is set to approve nearly 25 Indian fishery units, making them eligible to export to the Russian market, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

This development comes shortly after the European Union approved 102 additional marine product units from India for exports.

“Russia is also on the course of approval nearly 25 fishery establishments,” Goyal confirmed to reporters in New Delhi.

Diversifying Export Markets

India is actively negotiating with several countries, including the UAE, to diversify its shrimp and fish exports. This strategic move is particularly important for the shrimp sector, which has been significantly impacted by a steep 50% tariff imposed by the United States.

India’s shrimp exports stood at $4.88 billion in 2024-25, accounting for 66% of the country’s total seafood exports.

Progress on India-EU FTA

When questioned about the proposed free trade agreement between India and the European Union, Minister Goyal expressed strong optimism. “I am very confident that in the coming months we should be able to come to an understanding with the EU subject to sorting out some of the last mile issues which are currently under negotiations,” he stated.
