PM Modi hails phase-1 success of Trump peace plan for Gaza

Trump Peace Plan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the success of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. He also hailed the “strong leadership” of Israel president Benjamin Netanyahu.

“We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace,” Modi posted on X.

Trump on Thursday, announced that Hamas and Israel had agreed to the first phase of his 20-point peace plan for Gaza. This involves the release of hostages/prisoners and the withdrawal of Israel and Hamas troops from certain areas of Gaza.

Modi’s praise for Trump comes at a time when India and the US are deadlocked over tariffs and visa charges imposed by Trump.

Trump on India-Pakistan conflict

Modi had earlier hailed Trump twice for floating the peace proposal involving Israel, Palestine, and Hamas. However, he has not yet publicly refuted or acknowledged Trump’s claim of brokering peace between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

The Centre had earlier officially said that Trump had no role to play in the India-Pakistan ceasefire mediation. Trump had said: “I said, I don’t want to make a trade deal with you [India, Pakistan]… You guys are going to end up in a nuclear war… I said, call me back tomorrow. But we are not going to do any deals with you, or we are going to put tariffs on you that are so high, your head’s going to spin… Within five hours, it [ceasefire] was done. Maybe it starts again, but I will stop it if it does.”

Refuting the claim , Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said: “Prime Minister Modi clearly conveyed to President Trump that at no point during this entire sequence of events was there any discussion, at any level, on an India-U.S. Trade Deal, or any proposal for a mediation by the U.S. between India and Pakistan. The discussion to cease military action took place directly between India and Pakistan through the existing channels of communication between the two armed forces, and it was initiated at Pakistan’s request. Prime Minister Modi firmly stated that India does not and will never accept mediation. There is complete political consensus in India on this matter.”

Trump has, however, kept up his claim, repeating that he was the one to “stop a war between two nuclear states”.
