O2 and Starlink Partner to Bring Mobile Coverage to Rural UK

O2 and Starlink Partner to Eliminate UK Mobile Dead Zones

Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Elon Musk’s Starlink to launch O2 Satellite, a new service that will provide mobile coverage to 95% of the UK, including remote rural areas. The service is scheduled to go live in the first half of 2026, ending connectivity blackspots from Lands End to Inverness.

Key Takeaways

  • O2 Satellite service launches H1 2026, covering 95% of the UK.
  • Partnership marks Starlink’s first collaboration with a UK mobile operator.
  • Initial services include messaging and data, with more features to follow.
  • Internal trials are underway, with customer rollout planned for early 2026.

Ending Mobile Dead Zones

The O2 Satellite partnership aims to solve the long-standing problem of mobile coverage gaps in rural Britain. Unlike traditional satellite internet known for high latency, Starlink’s low Earth orbit constellation promises high-speed, reliable connectivity.

‘We’re excited to bring a satellite-to-mobile network to the UK with Virgin Media O2,’ said Mike Nicolls, Starlink VP of Engineering. ‘This partnership underscores the importance of Starlink Direct to Cell’s mission to end mobile dead zones and deliver connectivity in remote areas where it wasn’t possible before.’

UK-First Innovation

This collaboration represents a significant milestone as the first partnership between Starlink and a UK mobile operator. SpaceX has already launched over 10,000 satellites as part of its global connectivity mission.

‘This UK-first partnership is another example of Virgin Media O2 innovating to provide a better experience and peace of mind for our customers,’ said Lutz Schüller, CEO of Virgin Media O2. ‘Starlink is a clear leader in this space, operating the world’s most advanced satellite constellation.’

Government Support and Future Plans

The initiative has received backing from the UK government, recognizing its potential to bridge the digital divide and support economic growth in remote communities.

‘This partnership demonstrates exactly how private sector innovation can deliver real benefits for people across the UK,’ said Telecoms Minister Liz Lloyd. ‘Whether you’re running a farm in Cumbria or hiking in the Cairngorms, you’ll soon have the peace of mind that comes with reliable coverage.’

Virgin Media O2 is currently conducting internal trials, with full customer rollout expected in early 2026. While pricing details remain undisclosed, the company has confirmed that messaging and data services will be available initially, with additional features to follow.
