Nobel Prize 2025: Winners to be announced starting today, beginning with medicine

The world’s most prestigious scientific and cultural prizes are back this week, as the 2025 Nobel Prize announcements begin. Starting Monday, the first laureates of the year will be revealed in Stockholm and Oslo. This marks the continuation of a 124-year tradition of honouring discoveries and achievements that have reshaped our understanding of life, the universe, and human society.

The week opens with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute will announce the winner. The person or institute will receive a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash award.

Last year, the prize went to American scientists Gary Ruvkun and Victor Ambros for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA and its role in regulating genes after transcription. This finding has transformed genetics and molecular biology.

Following the medicine prize, the spotlight will turn to physics on Tuesday. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will name this year’s laureates. They will highlight advances in fields that have seen rapid growth in recent years, like quantum computing, space physics, and materials research.

Last year, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton received recognition for foundational contributions to machine learning and artificial neural networks. Their work has fueled today’s AI revolution.

On Wednesday, the chemistry prize will be announced. Chemistry undoubtedly has been at the center of some of the most exciting scientific breakthroughs of recent decades. In 2024, the award celebrated the work of David Baker for computational protein design. It also recognized Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for predicting protein structures. The latters’ research has opened new doors in drug discovery, medicine, and biotechnology.

Thursday brings the Nobel Prize in Literature. This category often sparks lively heated debate and international discussion. Literature laureates are chosen for their ability to capture the human experience through words, influence culture, and challenge readers to think differently about society and history.

In 2024, South Korean writer Han Kang won the award for her hauntingly poetic writing. She confronts historical traumas and explores human fragility in moving, unforgettable ways.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday from Oslo, Norway. This award often draws intense global attention. The 2024 Peace Prize went to Nihon Hidankyo from Japan for its efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons. The institute is also popular for its advocacy for remembering the devastating human cost of nuclear warfare. The organization’s work has helped keep the message of peace and caution at the forefront of international discussions.

Finally, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on Monday, October 13. Last year, the prize went to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson. Their studies focus on how institutions shape economic prosperity and development. The research has provided some important insights into why some nations succeed economically, while others continue to struggle.
