Nobel Peace Prize 2025: The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Maria Corina Machado for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.†The announcement was made in Oslo.
Machado has long advocated for the freedom of the Venezuelan people, and her recognition comes amid growing global concerns over political repression. Observers noted that Venezuela’s rigid control mirrors trends worldwide, where the rule of law is undermined, independent media silenced, critics imprisoned, and societies move toward authoritarianism and militarisation.Â
This year, the Nobel Peace Prize received 338 nominations, including 244 individuals and 94 organisations, underscoring the competitive nature of the award. Machado’s recognition has highlighted ongoing struggles for democracy and human rights both in Venezuela and internationally.
