Trump Urges Zelenskyy Approval for US Ukraine Peace Plan

Trump: Ukraine Peace Plan Requires Zelensky’s Approval

US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Washington has identified a potential path to peace between Ukraine and Russia, but emphasized that any proposal would only proceed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s approval.

Key Developments

  • Trump confirms US-drafted peace plan under consideration
  • Zelenskyy describes current moment as “most difficult” in Ukraine’s history
  • Proposal involves potential territorial concessions and military limits
  • 28-point draft reportedly has Trump’s support

“We think we have a way of getting peace, he’s going to have to approve it. I think they’re getting reasonably close, but I don’t want to predict,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office.

Zelenskyy’s Critical Stance

Speaking at a public gathering in Kyiv, President Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine faces one of its most challenging historical moments as it evaluates the US proposal.

“Now is one of the most difficult moments of our history … Now, Ukraine can face a very difficult choice — either losing dignity or risk losing a major partner,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian leader pledged to “fight 24/7 to ensure that at least two points in the plan are not overlooked – the dignity and freedom of Ukrainians.”

Proposal Details

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the peace proposal could involve:

  • Kyiv ceding territory in the eastern Donbas region
  • Limits on Ukraine’s military capabilities
  • US-backed security guarantees in exchange

US officials stress the 28-point draft remains a work in progress and requires compromises from both Russia and Ukraine. Some elements seen as favoring Moscow’s demands are not final and expected to change during negotiations.

The proposal represents Washington’s latest attempt to revive peace efforts and end the nearly three-year-long conflict that escalated after Russia’s 2022 invasion. Some provisions, particularly territorial concessions in areas not fully under Russian control, have previously been rejected by Kyiv.
