The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie, is nearing its month-old mark. The case has seen massive public interest and dozens of investigative leads, yet no conclusive breakthrough.
The road in front of Nancy Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills, just outside of Tucson, has journalists and social media streamers who have stationed themselves over the past three weeks.
Community tension with the media
Residents living near Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson residence have increasingly issued stern warnings to the media and social media “streamers” who have camped around the neighbourhood in the weeks since her disappearance.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office expanded no-parking zones around her home due to complaints about traffic congestion, trespassing, trash and safety hazards caused by the heavy presence of news crews and content creators.
Neighbours in Tucson grow increasingly frustrated at media congestion in the area and have placed a warning and request at a pole in Nancy’s neighborhood.
JLR Investigates on X shared an image from Nancy’s neighborhood with a sign that reads, “Dear media, this neigborhood needs space to process, heal and gather in privacy as a loving community. Please cover this tragedy from elsewhere so that we may have some privacy, space and dignity.”
Candlelight vigil to honor Nancy Guthrie
JLR Investigates on X shared that locals are also planning a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. tonight near the KVOA station on Elm Street in Tucson to honour Nancy Guthrie and show solidarity with her family.
As of March 1, authorities have not named any suspects nor confirmed any definitive lead in the disappearance. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue to analyse surveillance footage, DNA evidence and thousands of tips submitted by the public.
A neighbour’s Ring camera video showing multiple vehicles moving through the area on the night Nancy was last seen has given investigators new leads to explore, though it remains unclear if these recordings contain actionable evidence
