Meta Secures $27 Billion for Louisiana AI Data Center
Meta has finalized a massive $27 billion financing agreement with Blue Owl Capital to construct its largest global data center project in Louisiana. This landmark deal represents Meta’s biggest private capital arrangement as tech giants accelerate AI infrastructure development.
Key Takeaways
- Meta retains 20% equity in the Louisiana Hyperion project
- Blue Owl contributed $7 billion cash with Meta receiving $3 billion payout
- Facility to generate over 2 gigawatts for AI model training
- Expected to create 500+ jobs upon completion
Deal Structure and Project Details
Under the agreement, Blue Owl Capital-managed funds will own the majority stake in the Richland Parish facility, with Meta maintaining approximately 20% equity. Blue Owl’s $7 billion cash injection into the joint venture included a $3 billion one-time payment to Meta.
The Hyperion data center is projected to deliver more than 2 gigawatts of computing capacity specifically designed for training large language models – the technology powering AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
“An ambitious project that reflects the scale and speed required to power the next generation of AI infrastructure,” said Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz, Co-CEOs of Blue Owl.
Industry Context and Meta’s AI Strategy
Major technology companies including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and CoreWeave are projected to spend $400 billion on AI infrastructure this year according to Morgan Stanley estimates.
Meta’s Chief Financial Officer Susan Li described the deal as “a bold step forward.” The company has secured four-year initial leases with extension options for the Louisiana facility.
This development follows Meta’s June reorganization of AI efforts under Superintelligence Labs, responding to senior staff departures and mixed reception for its Llama 4 model. CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed in July that Meta would invest hundreds of billions in building multiple massive AI data centers for Superintelligence.
