Meet Satheesh Kumar, Dubai-based Hindu expat marking 23 years of Ramadan fasting

For most residents in the UAE, Ramadan is a deeply personal act of faith tied to Islam. But for some, the month has become a bridge between cultures. In Dubai, one long-time expatriate has quietly observed the Ramadan fast for more than two decades—despite belonging to a different religion.

Satheesh Kumar, a Hindu resident who has lived in Dubai since 2002, has been fasting during the holy month of Ramadan for the past 23 years. What began as a gesture of respect for the people around him gradually turned into a personal tradition that he continues to follow every year.

In an exclusive interview with Gulf News, Kumar explained that fasting during Ramadan is not merely about abstaining from food and drink but about developing inner discipline.

“It cultivates self-discipline and spiritual purification by abstaining from food, drink, and sinful behaviour,” said Kumar.

Over time, the practice has also changed how he sees the struggles faced by others. Experiencing hunger and thirst during the day, he said, has made him more aware of the hardships many people face in meeting their basic needs.

“Experiencing hunger and thirst helps me understand the plight of the poor and less fortunate, fostering a sense of charity and compassion.”

Ramadan, the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, is widely observed by Muslims around the world through fasting, prayer, and charitable acts. For Kumar, the spirit of the month, generosity, empathy, and self-reflection, resonates beyond religious boundaries.

Now 56, he also believes the practice offers practical benefits in daily life. Speaking to Gulf News, Kumar said fasting can bring physical and mental clarity.

“Beyond the spiritual aspects, fasting is believed to offer physical benefits by giving the digestive system a break.”

He added, “The mind will be more focused. In my work place, I experience more productivity results.”

After more than two decades, the Dubai resident continues to observe Ramadan each year. For him, the month remains a period of discipline, compassion, and renewal, values he believes can be shared by people of any faith.
