Kremlin Says Russia Would Back Trump’s Bid For Nobel Peace Prize

Russia would support US President Donald Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said on Friday, according to state news agency TASS.

Ushakov’s remarks come just hours before the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner is set to be announced.

While Kremlin officials expressed their backing, observers of the Nobel process say Trump’s chances of winning remain slim, reported Reuters. Moscow has repeatedly credited the US president for his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Kyiv would nominate Trump for the prize, which he has long sought, if he successfully secures a ceasefire.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, just a day after the Gaza ceasefire deal, a breakthrough likely reached too late to influence the committee’s decision on US President Donald Trump’s potential nomination.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to reveal the 2025 Peace Prize winner, the most anticipated of the annual awards at 0900 GMT in Oslo. The announcement comes only hours after Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire and hostage release deal aimed at ending more than two years of war in Gaza.

While Trump’s diplomatic pressure is widely viewed as pivotal in brokering the agreement, experts say the timing means it will have no bearing on this year’s prize. The committee reportedly held its final deliberations on Monday, finalizing a statement explaining its decision.

“The Gaza deal has absolutely no significance for the choice of the 2025 laureate because the Nobel Committee has already made its decision,” historian and Nobel Peace Prize expert Asle Sveen told AFP.
