India steps into Saudi Arabia’s mega metro dream: L&T joins Riyadh Red Line expansion to Diriyah Gate
In a major infrastructure win, Indian engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a key contract for the Riyadh Metro’s Red Line extension to the historic Diriyah Gate. This marks a significant entry for India into Saudi Arabia’s ambitious public transport expansion.
Key Project Details
The contract, awarded by the Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA), involves:
- Design and construction of a 1.8-kilometre elevated viaduct.
- Building five new stations and associated architectural works.
- Connecting Riyadh’s city centre to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Diriyah Gate.
L&T Construction’s Railways Strategic Business Group will execute the project, with completion scheduled in 42 months.
Part of a Larger Vision
This extension is a crucial component of the massive Riyadh Metro project, one of the world’s largest public transport systems under construction. It directly supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals to diversify the economy and develop infrastructure.
The Diriyah Gate development itself is a $50.6 billion project to transform the historic area into a global cultural hub. The metro will provide vital access for residents and tourists.
Strategic Significance
L&T’s contract win underscores the company’s expertise in complex urban transit and strengthens India’s role in Saudi mega-projects. It highlights the deepening economic and strategic partnership between the two nations and showcases the global competitiveness of Indian engineering firms.
