Google Drive Outage Locks US Users Out of Private Data and Files

Google Drive Outage Locks US Users Out of Private Data

A major Google service outage has left users across the United States unable to access their private files stored on Google Drive, with widespread reports of server connection failures disrupting work and school projects.

Key Takeaways

  • Thousands of users reported Google Drive access issues, particularly with Docs and Sheets.
  • Server connection problems were the primary complaint, affecting file access.
  • Major impact zones included New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
  • Google confirmed investigating the service outage with no immediate workaround.

Widespread Service Disruption

According to Downdetector, nearly 3,000 problem reports emerged by 1pm ET, with half citing server connection issues as the main problem. More than a third of affected users reported being unable to access their private files.

‘Please fix Google, people got school and work and they depend on Docs!’ one frustrated user commented Wednesday afternoon.

User Reports and Error Messages

Many users encountered specific error messages while trying to access their files. ‘It says: “Can’t open this file. This file isn’t available without an internet connection,”‘ one person reported.

The issues reportedly began around 12:25pm, with Google’s Workspace Status Dashboard updating at 1:44pm to acknowledge a ‘service outage’ affecting Google Docs, Google Drive, and Google Sheets.

Educational and Work Impact

The outage particularly affected students and professionals relying on Google’s collaboration tools. ‘My personal account works, but I cannot reach the server on my school account for docs,’ a student explained. ‘Very frustrating because I have to finish my memo.’

Another user reported: ‘Was working on a Google doc when it suddenly acted like I had no internet (not true). I need to access my default account for school but whenever I click the icon for it it redirects me.’

Intermittent Service Restoration

Multiple Google users experienced brief periods of restored access, only to lose connection to their data again after a few moments, indicating ongoing instability in the service recovery efforts.
