Elon Musk Supports H-1B Visa, Credits Indian Talent for US Benefit

Elon Musk Backs H-1B Visa, Says America Benefits from Indian Talent

Elon Musk has publicly supported the H-1B visa program, stating that America has “benefitted immensely from talented Indians.” However, the Tesla CEO also acknowledged significant misuse of the system by some companies during a conversation on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast.

Key Takeaways

  • Elon Musk supports the H-1B visa program for skilled workers.
  • He credits Indian talent for immense benefits to America.
  • Musk criticizes the “gaming” of the system by outsourcing firms.
  • He argues for border controls but opposes shutting down H-1B.

Musk’s Stance on Immigration Policy

When asked why the narrative on immigration has shifted, Musk cited “different schools of thought.” He strongly criticized the Biden administration’s approach, calling it a “total free-for-all” that led to massive illegal immigration.

“Unless you’ve got border controls, you’re not a country,” Musk said, emphasizing the need for security. He described a political divide, with the left advocating for open borders and the right fearing job losses to foreign talent.

Addressing H-1B Visa Misuse

Musk highlighted a dual reality: a global scarcity of talent that his companies face, contrasted with the cost-driven misuse of visas by other firms.

“My direct observation is that there’s always a scarcity of talented people… We have a lot of difficulty finding enough talented people,” he stated, clarifying that his firms pay “way above average.”

He pointed a finger at specific players, noting, “some of the outsourcing companies have kind of gamed the system on the H-1B front.”

The Call for Reform, Not Removal

Despite the flaws, Musk’s position is clear: reform the program, don’t end it. He warned that shutting down H-1B would be “very bad” for the country, separating himself from those on the right who advocate for its termination.

“We need to stop the gaming of the system… But I’m certainly not in the school of thought that we should shut down the H-1B Program,” he concluded.

The discussion underscores the ongoing around skilled migration, balancing economic need with systemic integrity.
