Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Bill Targets H-1B Visa Program Impacting Indian Techies

Marjorie Taylor Greene Introduces Bill to Eliminate H-1B Visa Program

Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has proposed legislation to completely phase out the H-1B visa program, directly targeting the system that brings thousands of Indian tech professionals to the United States annually.

Key Takeaways

  • MTG’s bill would eliminate the H-1B program entirely
  • Over 70% of H-1B visa holders are from India
  • Medical professionals would get temporary 10,000-visa cap
  • Trump recently softened his stance on H-1B visas
  • Trump Organization requested 184 foreign workers for 2025

Bill Targets Indian Tech Professionals

Greene’s legislation comes just days after President Trump expressed support for bringing foreign talent to the US. The bill specifically impacts Indian nationals, who constitute over 70% of H-1B visa holders according to BBC reports. Approximately 30% of Silicon Valley’s tech workforce consists of Indian professionals, as reported by the Economic Times.

“I am introducing a bill to END the mass replacement of American workers by aggressively phasing out the H1B program,” Greene announced on social media platform X.

American Workers First Policy

The Georgia representative accused “Big Tech, AI giants, hospitals, and industries across the board” of abusing the H-1B system. She claimed the program cuts “out our own people” despite American workers being “the most talented people in the world.”

Greene’s bill includes only one exemption: a 10,000 annual cap for medical professionals, which would also be phased out over ten years to develop “their own pipeline of American doctors.”

Growing Rift with Trump

The legislation highlights Greene’s divergence from Trump, who recently stated she had “lost her way.” Trump commented, “I don’t know what happened to Marjorie, nice woman, but she’s lost her way, I think.”

Greene has criticized Trump’s focus on global issues, telling NBC News that “watching the foreign leaders come to the White House through a revolving door is not helping Americans.”

Trump’s Changing Stance on H-1B

Despite his administration’s previous tough stance on immigration, Trump recently told Fox News there’s a crucial need to “bring in talent” to the US. When host Laura Ingraham countered that “We have plenty of talent,” Trump responded, “No, you don’t. You don’t have certain talents…”

This shift comes as the Department of Labor launched 175 investigations into alleged H-1B program abuse and introduced a $100,000 fee for new applications.

Contradiction in Trump Organization Hiring

Meanwhile, The Hill reported that Trump Organization requested 184 foreign workers for 2025 across properties including Mar-a-Lago, golf clubs, and Trump Vineyard Estates. The company seeks H-2A and H-2B visa holders for temporary positions, creating apparent contradiction with the administration’s stated immigration policies.
