China Plans to Ban Tesla-Style Hidden Door Handles for Safety

Key Takeaways

  • China proposes a ban on Tesla-style hidden door handles for safety reasons.
  • New rules mandate mechanical handles that work even during power failure.
  • Automakers have 7-19 months to comply, facing costly redesigns.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has unveiled a draft standard that could ban the hidden, flush door handles popularized by Tesla and used in many new energy vehicles (NEVs). The move follows safety concerns about emergency access during accidents.

New Safety Requirements

The proposed regulation mandates that all passenger car doors must have exterior handles with a minimum hand-operable space of 60mm x 20mm x 25mm and a mechanical release function. This would effectively ban fully flush, electronically actuated handles that extend only when activated.

Safety Concerns Behind the Ban

The ministry stated the move aims to enhance vehicle safety and protect lives. Hidden door handles have raised concerns about emergency access, particularly when sensors fail or power is lost during accidents.

“Hidden handles can jam in collisions or fires, complicating rescues,” an engineer from a domestic carmaker told National Business Daily. Reports, including an incident involving a Xiaomi SU7, highlight difficulties rescuers face in opening doors during emergencies.

Industry Impact and Response

Public data shows about 60% of China’s top 100 NEVs in April featured these handles, including models like the Nio ES8, Li Auto i8, Xiaomi YU7, and XPeng P7.

Automakers are bracing for costly redesigns but are ready to comply. Toyota is developing mechanical backups for hidden handles, while Geely and Leapmotor have pledged adherence to the new standard.

Transition Timeline

The proposal includes a transition period: new models must comply within seven months of adoption, and existing models within 19 months. The ministry is seeking public feedback before finalizing the rule.

If implemented, the standard could reshape vehicle design in China’s booming NEV market, prioritizing safety over style and futuristic aesthetics.
