China Announces Major Crackdown on Myanmar Border Scam Centers
Chinese authorities have announced a massive crackdown on scam centers operating along the Myanmar border, arresting over 57,000 Chinese nationals just days before a key political meeting in Beijing.
Key Developments
- More than 57,000 Chinese citizens arrested in fraud crackdown
- Major gang leaders Xu Faqi and Wei family members facing prosecution
- Scam centers accused of torture, murder, and brutal working conditions
- Crackdown comes ahead of important economic planning meeting in Beijing
Ongoing Operations Despite Crackdown
Despite China’s security operations in Myanmar and Thailand, an AFP investigation reveals scam centers continue to expand. Satellite imagery and drone footage show frenetic construction activity in heavily guarded compounds near Myawaddy on the Thailand-Myanmar border.
The operations appear to be using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service extensively. Victims are either trafficked or lured by false promises, then forced to work around the clock in phone and internet scams that extract billions from global victims.
Criminal Networks and Methods
Experts confirm most centers are run by Chinese-led crime syndicates collaborating with Myanmar militias in the lawless Golden Triangle region. These operations are notorious for romance scams and “pig butchering” investment schemes that have sparked widespread discussion across China.
Gang Leaders Face Justice
The Ministry of Public Security detailed cases against prominent gang leaders. Xu Faqi, arrested in January, allegedly operated 14 scam centers in Myanmar’s Kokang region and commanded a 400-man militia that beat and killed workers who failed to meet scam targets.
Members of the Wei family gang have been indicted and will soon face trial. The ministry described their compounds as places where “violence and brutality were everywhere” and featured “dog cages” where “beatings, corporal punishment, nail pulling, finger chopping and shootings were commonplace.”
Authorities stated the park-runners had “hands stained with the blood of the Chinese people” as the crackdown intensifies ahead of Beijing’s political gathering.
