Taliban Launches Retaliatory Attacks on Pakistan Border Posts

Key Takeaways

  • Taliban forces launched retaliatory attacks against Pakistani military posts along the border
  • Afghanistan accuses Pakistan of conducting air strikes on its territory
  • Heavy artillery exchanges reported across multiple border provinces
  • Pakistan shot down three Afghan drones suspected of carrying explosives
  • No casualties reported despite intense fighting

Afghanistan’s Taliban forces have launched armed reprisals against Pakistani soldiers along their shared border, escalating tensions between the neighboring nations. The clashes come in response to what Taliban officials describe as Pakistani air strikes on Afghan soil.

Border Clashes Spread Across Multiple Provinces

Senior Taliban officials from Kunar, Nangarhar, Paktia, Khost, and Helmand provinces confirmed ongoing hostilities. All these regions are located along the volatile Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The Afghan military stated that their eastern border forces “engaged in heavy clashes against Pakistani forces’ posts in various border areas” specifically “in retaliation for the air strikes by Pakistani forces.”

Recent Escalation Timeline

The current crisis began on Thursday when explosions were heard in Kabul and southeastern Afghanistan. The Taliban-run defense ministry quickly blamed Pakistan for these attacks, accusing their neighbor of “violating its sovereignty.”

While Islamabad hasn’t confirmed involvement in the strikes, it demanded that Kabul “stop harbouring the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) on its soil.” The TTP, which shares ideological ties with Afghanistan’s Taliban, has been accused of killing hundreds of Pakistani soldiers since 2021.

Current Military Situation

A senior official from Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province described the escalation: “This evening, Taliban forces began using weapons. We fired first light and then heavy artillery at four points along the border.”

He added that “Pakistani forces responded with heavy fire and shot down three Afghan quadcopters suspected of carrying explosives. Intense fighting continues, but so far, no casualties have been reported.”

The border violence occurs as TTP militants have intensified their campaign against Pakistani security forces in recent months, particularly in the mountainous border regions.
