Several international airlines suspend flights, reroute or cancel services amid tension in Iran

Commercial airline operations across the Middle East and surrounding regions were severely disrupted on Saturday, as a cascade of flight cancellations, suspensions and rerouted services was reported by carriers worldwide. Airline industry observers say this marks one of the most significant interruptions to regional flight schedules in recent years.

According to aviation tracking data and statements from airlines, airspace closures in several countries have forced carriers to halt flights, divert aircraft mid-route and suspend future services until further notice. The disruption has affected both point-to-point services and long-haul connections, causing widespread changes to itineraries for thousands of passengers.

Indian carriers take precautionary measures

Among carriers adjusting operations, Air India, in their official post on X, confirmed the suspension of all flights to destinations in the Middle East. In an official advisory, the airline said these changes are precautionary and driven by ongoing evaluations of airspace safety. Passengers who were booked on flights to the region were urged to check updated flight statuses through the airline’s official channels. The airlines’ official post on X read, “In view of the developing situation in parts of the Middle East, all Air India flights to all destinations in the Middle East have been suspended. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety for our passengers and crew.

We will continue to assess the safety and security environment for our flight operations and adjust operations proactively as required.

Our teams will be extending all necessary support to passengers.

Similarly, IndiGo issued a travel advisory stating it is actively monitoring developments affecting Iranian and regional airspace and has advised customers to verify flight status before departure. The airline emphasized that its operations teams are working to minimize disruption while safeguarding the well-being of travellers and crew.

The airlines’ official post on X read, “In view of the evolving situation around Iran and the Middle East, our flight operations to and from the Middle East and other select international sectors have been suspended until 1st March 2026. We understand the impact this may have on your travel plans and sincerely regret the inconvenience. We hope you understand that this decision has been taken as a proactive safety measure. In an endeavour to provide support to our customers, we are extending full flexibility and waivers for travel to/from the Middle East and select Interntional sectors until 7th March 2026, applicable to bookings made on or before 28th February, 2026. International carriers adjust schedules

The impact of the unfolding situation extended beyond Indian carriers. Türkiye’s national airline, Turkish Airlines, announced it had cancelled flights to multiple Middle Eastern destinations, with some cancellations planned through March 2, 2026, and others for the immediate 24-hour period. These included services to countries such as Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Jordan as airspace restrictions took effect.

Major European and Gulf carriers also reported substantial changes to their flight schedules, with some services suspended and others rerouted to avoid restricted airspace. Lists of affected flights circulating on travel news sites show a range of cancellations and altered routing between Europe, the Indian subcontinent, and key hub airports in the Middle East.

Passenger advice and industry response

Airlines with impacted routes have encouraged passengers to check flight status directly through official websites and customer service channels before travelling to airports. Many carriers are offering refunds, rebooking options and customer support for affected bookings.

Aviation authorities in the region have been engaging with carriers in real time to assess airspace permissions and flight safety considerations, and some are regularly updating schedules in response to evolving conditions.

What passengers should know now

  • Check flight status before travel: With cancellations and diversions ongoing, passengers should verify their schedules with their airline shortly before departure.

  • Expect changes: Flights originally scheduled to fly over or into the Middle East may be rerouted or temporarily suspended.

  • Follow airline advisories: Airlines are issuing regular advisories with the latest operational information and guidance for affected passengers.
