YouTube Launches 3 New Parental Control Tools for Teen Safety

YouTube Announces 3 New Tools to Help Parents Tailor Experience for Teens

YouTube has rolled out three new features globally, giving parents enhanced control over their teenagers’ viewing habits, screen time, and content access on the platform.

Key Takeaways

  • Parents can now set break reminders and bedtime alerts for teens.
  • A new “approved content only” mode restricts viewing to parent-vetted videos and channels.
  • These tools are a direct response to parent feedback and are part of YouTube’s safety initiatives.

Enhanced Parental Supervision Features

The first tool is a parental supervision feature that lets parents set custom reminders for their teens to take breaks from watching. The duration is customizable, and notifications will appear directly on the teen’s screen.

Bedtime and Content Restrictions

Secondly, a dedicated bedtime reminder allows parents to set a specific cut-off time. After this time, the YouTube app will prompt the teen to stop watching and go to sleep.

The third and most restrictive tool is an “approved content only” mode for supervised accounts. When enabled, teens can only watch videos, channels, and collections that a parent has explicitly approved. This is stricter than the existing “explore” settings, which offer a broader, age-appropriate content pool.

Rollout and Development

These features are part of YouTube’s broader effort to create a safer, more customizable experience for younger users. The global rollout is scheduled for the coming weeks.

YouTube stated the updates were developed based on direct feedback from parents seeking better ways to manage their teens’ YouTube usage and align it with family preferences.
