Samsung Plans $310 Billion AI Investment to Boost Chip Production

Samsung Announces $310 Billion Investment to Fuel AI Expansion

Key Takeaways

  • Samsung will invest $310 billion over five years primarily in AI technology
  • New Pyeongtaek Plant 5 semiconductor facility to begin operations in 2028
  • Investment follows South Korea’s push to become top-three AI power globally

Samsung has unveiled a massive $310 billion investment plan focused on artificial intelligence technology, responding to growing global demand. The five-year investment package aims to strengthen South Korea’s position in the competitive AI semiconductor market.

Major Semiconductor Expansion

The investment includes construction of Pyeongtaek Plant 5, a new semiconductor facility designed to meet increasing memory-chip demands. Samsung stated the plant “is expected to play an even greater strategic role in both the global semiconductor supply chain and South Korea’s domestic chip ecosystem” once fully operational in 2028.

Samsung SDS, the group’s IT and logistics division, will establish two AI data centers in South Jeolla and Gumi locations, though specific details weren’t provided.

Beyond AI: Battery Technology

While primarily focused on AI, the $310-billion package also includes non-AI projects. Samsung SDI, the company’s electric-vehicle battery affiliate, is exploring domestic production lines for next-generation batteries, including all-solid-state batteries.

AI Boom Driving Growth

The artificial intelligence surge has significantly benefited Samsung Electronics and fellow South Korean chipmaker SK hynix. Their high-performance memory chips have become essential components for AI computing infrastructure.

Samsung Electronics recently reported over 30% year-on-year profit growth in the third quarter, directly attributed to AI-driven demand. However, concerns about an AI market bubble persist as tech valuations soar globally.

Government Backing

Samsung’s announcement follows the South Korean government’s pledge to triple AI spending next year. President Lee Jae Myung has committed to “usher in the AI era” and position South Korea among the world’s top three AI powers, trailing only the United States and China.
