Sam Altman Defends ChatGPT Adult Mode: Not Moral Police

Sam Altman Defends ChatGPT Adult Mode: ‘We’re Not Moral Police’

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has clarified the company’s position on upcoming “Adult Mode” features for ChatGPT, emphasizing that OpenAI does not aim to be the “moral police of the world” while maintaining strong protections for minors.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT’s Adult Mode will allow more freedom for verified adult users
  • Mental health protections for minors remain strictly enforced
  • Adult content features will be opt-in only
  • OpenAI developing age prediction technology for automatic teen protections

Following social media criticism about plans to allow adult content including erotica, Altman clarified that this was merely an example of increased user freedom for adults, not a policy shift on mental health safeguards.

“This tweet about upcoming changes to ChatGPT blew up on the erotica point much more than I thought it was going to! It was meant to be just one example of us allowing more user freedom for adults,” Altman noted in a post on X.

“We are not loosening any policies related to mental health. This is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection. We also care very much about the principle of treating adult users like adults,” he added.

Balancing User Freedom and Protection

Altman stressed that OpenAI will continue to block content that could harm others and will handle mental health crises differently. The company aims to help users achieve long-term goals without being paternalistic.

“We are not the elected moral police of the world. In the same way that society differentiates other appropriate boundaries (R-rated movies, for example) we want to do a similar thing here.”

Previously, Altman acknowledged that OpenAI made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive” to address mental health risks, but this made the AI “less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems.”

With new tools to mitigate serious mental health issues, OpenAI now believes it can “safely relax the restrictions in most cases.”

Enhanced Safety Measures for Minors

OpenAI is developing age prediction technology to automatically apply teen-appropriate settings when minors are detected. Parents can link accounts with their teens for direct control and receive notifications if the system detects distress.

AI Adult Content: Opt-In Only

The adult content functionality will be strictly opt-in, meaning users “won’t get it unless you ask for it.” This approach comes amid broader industry debates about AI and adult content.

Recently, Meta faced criticism for sexualized Instagram chatbots like “Step Mom” and “Russian Girl,” while Elon Musk’s Grok AI received backlash for its “Ani” character that appears in lingerie using provocative language in NSFW mode. Grok AI has also been used to create erotica content shared widely on X.
