Reddit Outage Affects Thousands Globally, Company Confirms Fix

Key Takeaways

  • Reddit experienced a global outage affecting thousands of users
  • Over 20,000 outage reports in the US, 400+ in India
  • Company identified the issue, applied a fix, and confirmed resolution
  • 63% of users reported app issues, 29% website problems

Reddit faced a significant service disruption that prevented thousands of users worldwide from accessing its platform through both the app and website. The company acknowledged increased error rates and launched an immediate investigation into the outage.

Outage Scale and User Impact

According to Downdetector, user complaints peaked at approximately 5:43 PM with around 20,000 reports in the United States. In India, over 400 users reported similar access problems. The breakdown showed 63% of users experienced app issues, 29% faced website problems, and 7% reported server connection failures.

Company Response and Resolution

Reddit confirmed the technical difficulties through its status page, stating: “We are aware that users are seeing increased error rates when browsing Reddit and are currently investigating.” The platform later updated that it had identified the root cause, applied a necessary fix, and was monitoring the situation. The company has since declared the incident fully resolved.

User Reactions to Service Disruption

Social media platforms, particularly X, filled with user comments as people sought to determine whether the problem was widespread or limited to their accounts. One user expressed relief: “Me feeling relieved after finding out that Reddit is down and my account isn’t banned.” Another frustrated user noted ongoing issues: “I can’t believe the app is so buggy… nothing works… chats, posts, and it is still not working for the last 4 days.” The outage marks another service disruption for Reddit, which previously experienced downtime due to Amazon Web Services issues that affected multiple online platforms.
