Elon Musk: AI and Robotics Will Eliminate Poverty Completely

Key Takeaways

  • Elon Musk asserts AI and robotics are the definitive solution to global poverty.
  • He envisions a future where currency becomes irrelevant and work is optional.
  • Tesla’s Optimus robot will pioneer this change, but multiple companies will follow.

Elon Musk has declared that artificial intelligence and robots will eradicate poverty, framing it as a solvable engineering challenge. Speaking at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum, the tech billionaire argued this technological shift is the only viable path to universal wealth, despite concerns about job displacement.

The Engineering Solution to Poverty

Musk, sharing a panel with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, pointed to repeated failures by NGOs to solve poverty. “But AI and humanoid robots will actually eliminate poverty,” he stated, positioning technology as the ultimate solution.

While some might view this as promotion for Tesla’s Optimus robot, Musk clarified his company won’t have a monopoly. “Tesla won’t be the only one that makes them. I think Tesla will pioneer this, but there will be many other companies that make humanoid robots,” he explained.

Emphasizing his point on X, Musk wrote: “Poverty is an engineering problem.”

A Future Without Money

Musk envisions a radical future where currency becomes obsolete. “There will still be constraints on power like electricity and mass. But I think at some point currency becomes irrelevant,” he said.

In this vision, people wouldn’t work for survival but for enjoyment—comparable to “playing sports or a video game.” AI advancements would free humans to pursue passions like gardening. “It’s much harder to grow vegetables in your backyard, but some people still do it because they like growing vegetables,” Musk noted.

These remarks come as Musk faces scrutiny over his wealth from figures like Billie Eilish, adding context to his vision of a post-scarcity economy.
