Platform X Now Shows User Countries to Fight Misinformation

Platform X Rolls Out Country Labels to Combat Misinformation

Platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has begun displaying user country information on profiles in a limited rollout starting November 21, 2025. This long-awaited transparency feature aims to help users identify potential foreign interference and propaganda campaigns.

Key Takeaways

  • Platform X starts showing user country information on select profiles
  • Feature designed to combat misinformation and foreign interference
  • Users can opt to show continent instead of specific country
  • Limited rollout began November 21, 2025

How the Feature Works

While not available to all users initially, some X users can now check an account’s bio section to see where the account is based. The feature appears alongside the account joining date and provides additional context about the profile’s origin.

X head of product Nikita Bier explained the rationale behind this move in an October 14 post, stating it aims to help users verify content authenticity.

“When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world. As part of that, we’re experimenting with displaying new information on profiles, including which country an account is based, among other details. Starting next week, we will surface this on a handful of profiles of X team members to get feedback,” Bier posted.

What Information is Displayed

The new update provides several data points for eligible accounts:

  • Account creation date and location
  • Verification status
  • Country of operation
  • Number of username changes
  • Connected app store country

Support and Criticism

Supporters believe country labels will help identify accounts spreading misinformation, interfering in foreign affairs, engaging in unethical engagement farming, or impersonating users from other regions.

However, privacy advocates have expressed concerns about users who prefer to keep their location information private. In response, X has provided an option for users to display their continent or geographical region instead of their specific country.
