PhonePe Integrates ChatGPT: AI Assistance Comes to Indian Users

Key Takeaways

  • PhonePe integrates ChatGPT to provide AI assistance to millions of Indian users
  • Features include travel planning, shopping help, and information discovery
  • Partnership marks one of India’s first major consumer platform AI integrations
  • Company continues IPO preparations with potential ₹11,000-12,000 crore offering

Digital payments leader PhonePe has partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT’s AI capabilities directly to its platform, making advanced artificial intelligence assistance available to millions of users across India. The integration, announced on November 13, represents a significant step in democratizing AI technology for everyday use.

How PhonePe’s ChatGPT Integration Works

The collaboration aims to expand generative AI access within India’s digital ecosystem. By embedding ChatGPT directly into PhonePe’s platform, users nationwide will receive AI-powered support for various daily activities.

The feature will assist with tasks including travel planning, shopping decisions, and general information discovery. According to the company’s official statement, this will enhance user experience by delivering “smarter and relevant” information directly within the app ecosystem, spanning PhonePe consumer app, PhonePe for Business, and Indus Appstore.

Accelerating AI Adoption Across India

This partnership represents one of the first large-scale implementations of ChatGPT on a major Indian consumer platform. The move could significantly accelerate AI adoption throughout the country while opening opportunities for new use cases as AI tools gain popularity among digital users.

Rahul Chari, Founder and CTO of PhonePe, commented: “At PhonePe, we have spent years building the foundational layers for digital services at population scale. This strategic alliance demonstrates that collaborations between innovative companies in this space can help expand the reach of cutting-edge technology to the broader population. We are excited to partner with OpenAI to begin this journey.”

Oliver Jay, Head of International at OpenAI, added: “Our collaboration with PhonePe is a significant milestone in our mission to make AI more accessible to people throughout India. India is a global hub for innovation, and PhonePe’s deep understanding of the country’s fabric and its user base make them the ideal partner. This partnership will demonstrate the immense value of consumer AI across India, helping millions of users enhance their daily lives.”

PhonePe IPO Developments

Meanwhile, PhonePe continues preparations for its potential public offering. The company is expected to raise ₹11,000-12,000 crore primarily through an offer for sale, with a fresh issue comprising only a minor portion of the total size.

The digital payments platform had been preparing for its public listing for several months before filing draft papers. In February, PhonePe appointed JP Morgan, Citi India, Morgan Stanley, and Kotak Mahindra Capital as merchant bankers for the IPO. The company transitioned from private to public entity in April.

However, the company clarified that “The filing of the PDRHP shall not necessarily mean that the company will undertake the IPO,” indicating the public offering remains subject to market conditions and regulatory approvals.
