Meta Layoffs: 600 AI Jobs Cut in Superintelligence Labs

Meta Plans 600 Layoffs in AI Superintelligence Labs

Meta is reportedly planning another round of job cuts, potentially affecting around 600 employees within its Superintelligence Labs AI division. This move comes even as the company continues its massive investment in artificial intelligence to compete with rivals like Google and OpenAI.

Key Details of the Reported Layoffs

  • Approximately 600 roles in the Superintelligence Labs AI unit may be affected.
  • The layoffs were announced via an internal memo from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang.
  • Multiple divisions are likely impacted, including the Facebook AI Research (FAIR) unit and teams working on AI products and infrastructure.
  • The recently formed TBD Lab, focused on next-generation AI models, is reportedly not affected.

Affected employees will receive support during the transition and are encouraged to apply for other open roles within Meta.

Meta’s AI Investment Context

Meta’s AI journey began in 2013 with the launch of FAIR and the hiring of Yann LeCun as chief AI scientist. The company has since built a global research network advancing its deep learning technologies. The Superintelligence Labs encompasses foundational teams, product divisions, the FAIR unit, and the TBD Lab.

In a separate development, Meta recently announced a partnership with Blue Owl Capital to build the Hyperion Data Centre. Under this agreement, Blue Owl Capital’s managed funds will hold an 80% stake, while Meta maintains 20%. The parties have committed to fund their respective pro rata share of the approximately $27 billion in total development costs.
