Apple has expanded its MacBook lineup with the introduction of the MacBook Neo, a new entry-level laptop designed to make the Mac ecosystem more accessible. The device sits well below the new MacBook Air M5 model in Apple’s portfolio and comes with a starting price that is about Rs 50,000 lower. While both laptops share a similar lightweight design and are aimed at people who want portable machines, a lot of hardware differences between them are quite noticeable. Apple has trimmed several features in the Neo to keep the cost down, which means buyers will need to carefully consider what they are getting before making a decision. The Air, however, remains the thinner device overall, while the Neo has a slightly smaller footprint because it uses a smaller display panel. The design differences become clearer once you look at the smaller details.
For instance, the MacBook Neo skips some features that many users may take for granted on modern laptops. The keyboard on the Neo is not backlit, which means typing in low-light environments could be less convenient. The trackpad is also simpler compared to the one on the MacBook Air. It also supports Apple’s wider P3 colour range and True Tone technology, which adjusts the screen’s colour temperature based on surrounding lighting conditions. Chipset? RAM?
The performance gap between the two devices is likely to matter the most for many buyers. The MacBook Neo runs on the A18 Pro chip, which is the same processor family used in Apple’s iPhones. What about Camera and audio? Are there clear tradeoffs?
When it comes to cameras and audio, the MacBook Air again has stronger hardware. It features a 12-megapixel camera with Center Stage support, which keeps users centred in the frame during video calls. The MacBook Neo uses a standard 1080p FaceTime camera. Audio hardware also varies, with the Neo offering a dual-speaker system while the Air includes four speakers and support for spatial audio when paired with compatible AirPods.
Connectivity
Connectivity is another area where the MacBook Air offers more flexibility. The Neo includes two USB-C ports, but they operate at different speeds. For buyers deciding between the two, the choice largely comes down to budget and workload. Those who want a simple Mac for everyday use may find the MacBook Neo good enough. But users who expect higher performance or plan to keep their laptop for several years may find the MacBook Air worth the extra money.
