Google’s Android PC OS Codenamed Aluminium Revealed in Job Listing

Key Takeaways

  • Google’s new PC operating system, codenamed “Aluminium,” has been revealed via a job listing.
  • The Android-based OS is being built with AI at its core.
  • This confirms Google’s plan to merge ChromeOS and Android into a unified platform.

Google’s upcoming Android-powered operating system for PCs appears to have been leaked through a job posting, revealing the project’s internal codename as “Aluminium.” The discovery confirms the tech giant is actively developing a unified platform to compete with Windows and macOS.

Job Listing Reveals Aluminium OS Details

A recent job posting for a ‘Senior Product Manager, Android, Laptop and Tablets’ explicitly mentions working on “a new Aluminium, Android-based, operating system.” The listing was discovered by tipster Frost Core on Telegram and reported by Android Authority.

The role involves “driving the roadmap and curating a portfolio of ChromeOS and Aluminium Operating System (ALOS) Commercial devices” across various form factors including laptops, detachables, tablets, and boxes.

AI-Centric Architecture

Similar to the recently teased Android XR, Google states that Aluminium OS is “built with artificial intelligence (AI) at the core.” This suggests AI integration will be a fundamental feature of the new platform.

Official Confirmation of Merger

Earlier this year, Sameer Samat, President of Google’s Android ecosystem, publicly confirmed the company’s plans: “We’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform.”

Samat expressed particular interest in understanding how users interact with their laptops, indicating the merger aims to enhance productivity across devices. This unified approach mirrors Apple’s integrated ecosystem strategy.

In June 2024, Google announced that ChromeOS would be “developed on large portions of the Android stack,” marking the official beginning of the integration process.
