Instagram Enforces PG-13 Standard for Teen Accounts in Safety Overhaul

Instagram is implementing a major safety overhaul, enforcing a PG-13 content standard for all teen accounts to limit exposure to risky and explicit material.

Key Takeaways

  • All teen accounts will now follow PG-13 content guidelines
  • New parental controls: “Limited Content” and “More Content” settings
  • Restrictions on teen interactions with adult accounts and AI conversations
  • Initial rollout in US, UK, Australia, Canada; global expansion planned

The platform is rolling out these changes first to teen accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, with completion expected by year-end before a worldwide launch.

Enhanced Parental Controls

Parents now have access to new settings including “Limited Content,” which filters posts that border on adult themes. When activated, teens cannot view, comment on, or receive comments from filtered content. Starting next year, these restrictions will also apply to AI conversations.

The “More Content” option allows parents to grant slightly broader access while maintaining Instagram’s baseline teen protections.

What PG-13 Means on Instagram

Under the new approach, content featuring nudity, sexual imagery, suggestive poses, strong language, or dangerous stunts will be hidden from teen feeds. Recommendations for such material will also be reduced.

“Just like you might see some suggestive content or hear some strong language in a PG-13 movie, teens may occasionally see something like that on Instagram, but we’re going to keep doing all we can to keep those instances as rare as possible,” Instagram stated.

Stricter Account Restrictions

Teens are now blocked from viewing or interacting with adult accounts, including direct messaging and content viewing. Instagram will notify creators flagged as 18+ and provide opportunities to remove inappropriate content.

Accounts repeatedly posting adult content will be completely blocked from teen users. Profiles with usernames, bios, or links to adult websites or alcohol stores will be age-gated, even for logged-out users.

Search and Policy Updates

The update prevents teens from searching terms like “alcohol” and “gore.” According to Meta, the changes aim to help parents better understand what their children can access on the platform.

“By and large, many of our policies were already generally in line with or actually went further than a PG-13 standard,” said Liz Arcamona, Meta’s director of public policy. “And where they go further today, they will continue to do so going forward.”

Building on Existing Protections

Instagram’s existing teen safety measures—including default private accounts, nighttime notification silencing, and blocking DMs from strangers—now extend to all users under 18. The revised system adds additional restrictions to better align with PG-13 standards.

Parental Feedback and Future Plans

Regular surveys will invite parents to provide feedback on content their teens encounter. While baseline restrictions remain, the new control options offer families flexibility. Meta plans to implement similar “age-appropriate content protections” on Facebook for teen users.

The current rollout targets teen accounts in four English-speaking countries, with global expansion to follow as Instagram works to standardize teen safety experiences across all markets.
