Google’s $15 Billion AI Hub in Visakhapatnam Boosts India’s Tech Future

Google’s $15 Billion AI Hub in Visakhapatnam Positions India as Global Tech Power

Google has announced a massive $15 billion investment to build its largest AI hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This landmark project will establish India as a premier global destination for artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies.

Key Takeaways

  • Google’s largest AI hub outside the US with $15 billion investment
  • Gigawatt-scale data center with subsea cable connectivity
  • Expected to create tens of thousands of jobs in India
  • Will deploy Google’s Gemini, Imagine, and Veo AI models

Project Details and Leadership Statements

Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the plans during the ‘Bharat AI Shakti’ event in New Delhi, noting he discussed the project with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi @OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development,” Pichai stated on social media.

He added: “This hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. Through it, we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”

Government Support and Vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the development, calling it significant for India’s Viksit Bharat vision. “Delighted by the launch of the Google AI Hub in the dynamic city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This multi-faceted investment that includes gigawatt-scale data centre infrastructure aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat,” he posted on X.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, confirmed the Vishakhapatnam facility will connect to Google’s global network spanning 12 countries. “It’s the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world, outside of the U.S. It represents a capital investment over the next five years of USD 15 billion,” Kurian emphasized.

Technical Capabilities and Infrastructure

The AI hub will feature Google’s proprietary TPUs (Tensor Processing Units), which are twice as power-efficient. Data will be stored locally to meet sovereign AI requirements, while the subsea cable infrastructure will serve as a digital backbone connecting different parts of India.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the investment will significantly boost AI infrastructure, benefiting startups, research initiatives, and youth employment opportunities.

Political Leadership Reactions

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu described the project as a “game changer for Andhra Pradesh’s economy and also the Indian youth.” He highlighted India’s technological leadership, noting: “Indians are well-known for Information Technology. You take any global company, Indian origin people are the CEOs, that is our strength.”

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman credited PM Modi’s policies for positioning India as a “digital fountainhead” that will now lead in AI and quantum technologies.

Partnership and Economic Impact

The project involves collaboration between Google, AdaniConneX, and Airtel, leveraging local expertise and infrastructure. The gigawatt-scale data center is expected to accelerate India’s digital economy, deliver cutting-edge AI tools to citizens, and establish Visakhapatnam as a major global technology destination.

The initiative aligns with India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, integrating clean energy and innovation ecosystems while creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth across the country.
