Gemini, where is the closest public washroom? Google Maps can now answer real-world questions

Google is adding a new AI-powered feature to the popular Google Maps app, which is used by millions of Indians. The company has introduced Ask Maps, a conversational tool built using its Gemini AI models that allows users to ask detailed real-world questions and receive direct answers inside the app.

Until now, Google Maps mostly worked through keyword searches. Users would type the name of a place, browse through nearby results and then decide where to go. With Ask Maps, Google is trying to simplify that process by allowing people to ask questions in natural language, similar to how they would speak to another person.

The feature can handle requests that combine multiple needs in a single query. For example, a user heading to Connaught Place could ask whether driving or taking the metro would be quicker at that moment and also request suggestions for a coffee stop on the way. The app would then compare travel options based on traffic and estimated travel time while also highlighting nearby cafes along the route.

Google says the responses are generated using information already available inside Google Maps. The platform contains details about more than 300 million places and draws insights from reviews, photos and updates shared by over 500 million contributors worldwide.

Gemini now allows Google Maps to handle complex queries

The integration of Gemini AI means Google Maps can now respond to more specific or unusual questions that were difficult for the app to interpret earlier.

People may now ask questions such as where to find a nearby public washroom, a place to quickly charge a phone, or a restaurant that matches certain preferences. The AI analyses the request and scans reviews, photos and other details to provide suggestions.

Google has explained in its blog post that someone meeting friends could ask Maps to suggest a vegetarian restaurant located between two neighbourhoods that has a cosy setting and availability for a group later in the evening. The system would then examine user reviews and other data to recommend suitable places.

“You can also follow up with, Which of these would be easiest to park in? Ask Maps will highlight important insights and insider tips from real people and web content, such as most popular vegetarian appetizers, matchday environment, valet parking availability, and more,” the company said.

Google has started rolling out Ask Maps in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices. The feature is launching first in English, while support for Hindi is expected to arrive later. Desktop availability is also planned in the future.
