Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia to Challenge Wikipedia’s Bias

Elon Musk’s xAI Launches Grokipedia to Challenge Wikipedia

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm xAI has officially launched Grokipedia, positioning it as a direct competitor to Wikipedia which Musk has repeatedly accused of systemic left-wing bias. The new AI-powered encyclopedia debuted with over 885,000 articles and promises significant improvements in future versions.

Key Details About Grokipedia’s Launch

  • Launched on Monday as version 0.1 with 885,000+ articles
  • Currently trails Wikipedia’s 7+ million English articles
  • Musk claims current version is already “better than Wikipedia”
  • Promises version 1.0 will be “10X better” than current site
  • Content generated by AI and Grok AI assistant

Musk’s Vision and Criticism of Wikipedia

“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal,” Musk stated on X following the launch.

The release was originally scheduled for September but delayed to “purge out the propaganda.” Musk has been a vocal Wikipedia critic, calling it “controlled by far-left activists” in 2024 and arguing in August that “Wikipedia cannot be used as a definitive source for Community Notes, as the editorial control there is extremely left-biased.”

Wikipedia’s Response

A Wikimedia Foundation spokeswoman defended Wikipedia’s model, telling AFP: “Unlike newer projects, Wikipedia’s strengths are clear: it has transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement.”

She emphasized that Wikimedia “is – and always will be – human” and noted that “this human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content, even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.” The foundation is still analyzing how Grokipedia operates.

Early Reception

The launch has drawn support from several right-wing figures, including Russian ideologue Alexander Dugin, who praised his Grokipedia entry as “neutral, objective, accurate” while calling his Wikipedia page “totally biased and defamatory.”
