Google’s $40B Texas AI Investment Draws Musk’s ‘Mind-Blowing’ Praise

Key Takeaways

  • Google commits $40 billion to Texas infrastructure through 2027
  • Investment focuses on Cloud and AI infrastructure development
  • Elon Musk calls AI spending “mind-blowing” in rare praise
  • Project includes new data centers and clean energy initiatives

Google has announced a massive $40 billion investment in Texas infrastructure through 2027, marking one of its largest US infrastructure commitments. The announcement drew unexpected praise from Elon Musk, who described the AI spending as “mind-blowing” while acknowledging even greater expenditures lie ahead.

Google’s Texas Expansion Plan

CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the investment via social media, emphasizing its focus on Cloud and AI infrastructure development. The commitment will support thousands of new jobs across Texas.

“Today, we’re announcing a new $40B investment in Texas through 2027 to build Cloud & AI infrastructure and support thousands of new jobs,” Pichai wrote.

“This includes new data centers in Armstrong and Haskell Counties and a major investment to strengthen energy resilience and abundance,” he added.

Google will fund training programs to more than double Texas’s projected pipeline of new electricians, addressing workforce needs for the AI era. Pichai thanked Texas Governor Greg Abbott for continued support during Google’s 15-year presence in the state.

Elon Musk’s Reaction

In a rare show of approval toward Google, Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded enthusiastically to the announcement despite his previous criticisms of the company.

“It’s mind-blowing how much money is being spent on AI compute so fast! But still many orders of magnitude to go…” Musk wrote.

Pichai responded with a lighthearted reference to Texas’s natural advantages:

“Between abundant sand, plenty of sun and space (literally) to put it in, we can do it :)”

Sustainable Growth Focus

Google emphasized that the investment will prioritize responsible infrastructure development, including adding clean energy resources to the Texas grid. The approach balances rapid AI expansion with environmental considerations.
