Apple now makes 1 in 4 iPhones in India

Apple is expanding its manufacturing presence in India. The Cupertino giant now manufactures 25 percent of all iPhones in the country, as per reports. This is part of the company’s strategy to reduce its dependence on China, particularly in response to US tariffs and ongoing trade tensions.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple assembled around 55 million iPhones in India in 2025, up from 36 million the previous year. This translates to an increase of 53 per cent in production year-on-year.

Apple’s total iPhone production globally stood between 220 million to 230 million units. This means that around 1 in every 4 iPhones were assembled in India.

Apple benefitted from India’s PLI scheme

Last year, Apple assembled all versions of the latest iPhone 17 series – including Pro and Pro Max models – in India from day 1. Older models such as iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 continue to be built for both domestic and export markets.

The report states that India’s production-linked incentives to attract manufacturers have helped Apple offset cost disadvantages in India, such as supply chain limitations and logistical challenges. Companies are now in discussions with New Delhi to extend these incentives, as current subsidies are set to expire on March 31.

Apple has five iPhone assembly plants in India, run by its partners – Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron Corp. The Cupertino giant’s supply chain has over 45 different suppliers, with reports stating that the company has created over 3,50,00 direct and indirect jobs via its manufacturing operations in the country.

Government data indicates Apple produced over $45 billion worth of iPhones in India between 2021-22 and 2024-25. Roughly 76 percent of that, or around $34 million accounted for exports.

Apple strengthens hold on Indian market

Apple has also seen a rapid rise in the Indian market, particularly in the premium segment. According to Counterpoint Research, the Cupertino giant held a 12 per cent share in the Indian market segment in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The iPhone 16 was the best-selling smartphone with 6.5 million units sold between January to November 2025.
